Rated 5 out of 5 by Silvio P. from A thing of beautyI'm using the lens on a Sony A7R with Metabones adapter. While the native 55 Zeiss FE lense is nothing short of phenomenal (albeit it could be faster), the 35mm f/2.8 really struggles with handheld shots in low light. I returned that lens, tried the Voigtlander Nokton Classic f/1.4 first (not good, super blurred full wide), then resolved to go all in with the Leica. The Summilux 35mm is an unbelievable performer, especially when coupled with Sony's focus peaking and live view zoom. Tack sharp, easy to focus, a compelling combination with the Sony A7R. The aperture ring could be a bit stiffer, the hood is not exactly sexy, the price is not for the faint of heart. Other than that, I find myself shooting 70% of the time with the Summilux, the rest with the native 55mm Zeiss. It passes the test of pixel-peeping a 36MP picture shot wide open, while delivering a creamy bokeh and faithful color rendition. The size with adapter is similar to the Zeiss 55mm, and considerably smaller than the Voigtlander Nokton 35mm Asph f/1.2, the only viable alternative. Bottom line, if price is not an issue, the Summilux is the best 35mm option out there.

35 Summicron vs Summilux

Hi r/Leica,

I'm lucky enough to be buying my first Leica M (the brand new M10) this upcoming week. I'm buying this camera as my daily walk around camera, since I already have a Canon 5D with all ranges covered but find that camera too bulky to take with me all the time. I already own a fast 50mm (M) lens but along with the M10 I want to get a 35mm lens as a walk around (street, family, occasional landscape). This will be my first 35 prime. I quite like 50 but find it that bit too narrow at times, that's why I'm opting for a 35mm. For the 35mm I see two options a new 35 Summicron asph or a used 35 Summilux asph. Since the price is not far off (only a few hundred dollars) I'm having a hard time deciding between the two. What are the major differences apart from speed between the two lenses? Is the contrast of the cron really better than the contrast from the lux? If someone has experiences with these lenses I would appreciate some advice.
